You might’ve heard
You might have heard that we’ve had some disruption recently with workers at some of our plantations. Several of you have written to ask about it & had head about Papua first & then East & South Kalimantan. The answer is yes there’s been some disruption. But here’s why it’s nothing you should worry about too much.
Action
There’s a range of issues. In some cases it’s because salaries for daily workers have been paid on different days of the month. Some are related to health coverage. Some others are requests to become permanent employees, even though that would make those people worse off financially.
Indonesia
We don’t consider these issues to be too major & discussions are ongoing to resolve them. It is not uncommon to have experiences like this when running a large company in Indonesia. We have 143,000 hectares of plantation harvesting, which is 2X the size of Singapore & we have about 23,000 people working with us!
Production
If you’re worried about impact on production, don’t. We’ve had a slower start to the year as normal in 2019, but just as we suggested last week, right on cue, production is starting to pick up. If we adjust last week for the holiday on Thursday, average daily fruit is up to 3,966 tons from 3,845 the previous week & 3,688 the one before.
