Our intrepid Mayak village patrol team Satgas Amour, (Arrtu Mayak OrangUtan Rescue) work daily to protect & monitor an orangutan population living in part of our Arrtu Energie Plantation in West Kalimantan.

Orangutans make & sleep in a new nest almost every night. We track here the number of nests we found & orangutans sighted.
Project spending includes salaries, operating expenses, equipment, training & hosting visitors.
6. October 2018, our first visitors
We had our first international visitors. A group of potential investors came from the U.K., Holland & Singapore to Mayak & then into the forest where they saw several orangutan nests, Then we went on to our Arrtu Energie plantation nearby. We are discussing with them a potential investment directly into Arrtu backed not only by the cash flows, but also by the hectares we conserve.
5. Orangutan snacks
Training completed, Satgas Amour team has been patrolling for 2.5 months. They’ve been busy, 6 orangutans sighted & 61 nests .In May they had to wade through 1.5 meter floods & in July they extinguished 6 fires. We joined them for a day & found 4 nests, including a baby one & some tasty orangutan snacks....warch.
4. Training
Our 6 member Satgas Amour patrol team, staff from our regional office in Ketapang & from our head office joined together with experts for a week of intense training. The first 2 days were in a classroom at a hotel in Ketapang. Then to Mayak Village for 3 days in the forest. On the first day they cane across several orangutans including a pregnant female. Listen to their excited reactions....
3. Selection
We went back to Ketapang & Mayak Village. We have chosen our patrol team, given the project a name, Satgas Amour (Arrtu, Mayak, OrangUtan Rescue. Next step is training in April. The journey to Mayak is always amazing, here’s a video of the latest trip.
2. Nest Quest
Stage 2 of our project was to go & see for ourselves. We travelled from our regional office in Ketapang, West Kalimantan by car, foot, boat & motorbike to Mayak village accross the river from the top of our Arrtu Energie estate. We crossed the river by boat, walked into the forest & saw for ourselves the orangutan nests. Watch the 1 minute video here. Step 3 will be to interview candidates from the village to join our own monitoring & survey team.
1. Nest Survey
Orangutans build nests in the trees to rest in & while you don't see the orangutans very often, you can know where they are by looking for the nests. An orangutan nest survey in the HCV area of our Arrtu Energie estate in West Kalimantan found over 50 potential nests which indicates there may be 30-60 orangutans living there. The data has been analyzed & a report presented to us. Later this month, we will start to prepare for the next stage which is to visit the area & see for ourselves.
